The Coast Guard vessel Ódinn
THE ICELANDIC COAST GUARD owned and operated Ódinn for nearly half a century, 1960-2006. Built in Aalborg, Denmark, the ship is 63 m long and 10 m wide and registers 910 grt. It has a specially reinforced prow and sides for sailing in ice. There are two main engines on board which deliver an engine speed of 18 knots (nautical miles), along with generators. The ship was always equipped with the most up to date navigational and telecommunications equipment. The towing winch weighed 20 tons and had a 3 km long tow rope.
THE COAST GUARD VESSEL ÓDINN still preserves for the most part its original appearance. The main modifications were made in 1975 when a helicopter hangar and an observation turret were added. The Ódinn took part in all three Cod Wars in the twentieth century in addition to its routine Coast Guard, rescue and service tasks.
In December og January the Coast Guard vessel Ódinn is only open for visits of groups under guidance.
