As a part of the Festival of the Sea, the Reykjavik Maritime Museum opened 4 new exhibitions in the museum. The whole festival was a success, with up to 11.000 people visiting the museum!

Baiting bright fishhookes: This exhibition is about the Little Fishing Book by Jón Sigurðsson, published in 1859, containing guidelines to fishing equipment and processing.  Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879) was a Icelandic scholar and statesman. A leader of the movement to secure Iceland’s political autonomy from Denmark, he took part in discussions that led to the restoration of the ancient Althing (parliament) as a consultative assembly in 1845, and later became its speaker. When full independence was finally achieved in 1944, his birthday was chosen as Iceland’s National Day. An influential advocate of free trade, education, and other liberal causes, he was the first Icelandic economist in the modern sense.

The Herring Adventure: This exhibition explores the adventurous herring era, using the photographs of Haukur Helgason from 1953-57, the short film of Sigurður Guðmundsson from 1941 and various object related to the herring fishing.  This combination creates an exiting atmosphere, be sure to come and experience!

The Call of the Sagas: A exhibition from Finland about a adventurous voyage in an open boat from Finland to Iceland, honoring the old viking shiping routes.

Watercolors by Ólafur Þór Thorlacius: Ólafur Þór worked with the Icelandic Coast Guard for many years as a mapmaker.
