Baiting bright fishhookes

This exhibition is about the Little Fishing Book by Jón Sigurðsson, published in 1859, containing guidelines to fishing equipment and processing. Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879) was a Icelandic scholar and statesman. A leader of the movement to secure Iceland’s political autonomy from Denmark, he took part in discussions that led to the restoration of the ancient Althing (parliament) as a consultative assembly in 1845, and later became its speaker. When full independence was finally achieved in 1944, his birthday was chosen as Iceland’s National Day. An influential advocate of free trade, education, and other liberal causes, he was the first Icelandic economist in the modern sense.
